Holy icicle-tooth Batman! A double post!

Posted on March 30, 2008

Last night in preparation for Earth Hour I made an ice sculpture and lit it with some tea lights. The blocks of ice were from some ice that had buckled up when the lake level dropped. I had to trim them to size but otherwise it was pretty easy.

Sculpture:

Abstract-looking Macro shot:

Abstract ice

Best results seemed to be a shutter speed just below 1sec and an aperture of around 5.6.

Telephoto lens at 300mm, 3.2 second shutter speed and mistakenly 400ISO (should have done 100 for less grain).

Message in a (abstract) bottle

Bottle

Gear: Canon Rebel XT/EF 100mm macro prime
Setup: Wine bottle and a flashlight

I love the extremely saturated texture of this shot…took about 20 tries to get just the right aperture (2.8) and shutter (1/160) combination in low light.

Otter

One of the few good pictures out of a whole lot that I took today at the Peterborough Zoo. I’ve been experimenting with metering and ended up with a tonne of ruined pictures. I learned quite a bit though so next outing should be a bit more successful.
