Fern from the Archives

fern

Taken at Jackson’s Park a while back. Not 100% happy with the tight crop of this picture but love the detailed ‘veins’ of the fern. I should have some more pictures to submit after the long weekend if the weather is nice.

Baby Birds

Posted on July 29, 2008

babybirds

These babies lived above the front light of the cottage I was at up in Parry Sound.  By the end of the week when they were too big for the nest, they decided to fall out and slowly walk into a nearby forest.

I named them, from left to right; Scarface, The Godfather, and The Godfather 2.

Meet Delilah..

delilah

…the cutest thing you’ll ever be afraid of. When she’s scared she rolls up into a complete ball, which she’s just coming out of now. She’s so spiky, but you just have to touch her!

Lord of the Dock

Posted on July 23, 2008

dockSpider

He looked as squishy as a starfish and as scary as anything I’ve ever seen before. I can only assume that he keeps his front ‘arms’ together like that to effectively double his ‘killing power’.

Taken on a dock on Miller Lake just north east of Parry Sound.

Lemon Cloud - A Photo Essay

WARNING! DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT EATEN A DELICIOUS DESSERT LATELY…

Mmmmm. foamy goodness

I recreated a dessert from a local restaurant and it only took two tries to get it right. Poor Stavros didn’t get any this time but maybe he can eat his screen and obtain similar fulfillment, although the trip to the emergency room might not be worth it…

Old Trail

sunnyTrail

Taken on the Ackison Trail just at Jackson Park.  It’s got a lot of flair and is grainy as it was accidentally on 1600ISO but I feel it kind of adds to the look in some way.  It makes it look like its been around and while and eloquently aged.

PS I’ll be taking pictures in Parry Sound over the next few days so expect nothing from me for a bit.  I’ll hopefully have some good shots to showcase when I get back.

Off Camera Flash Preview

Posted on July 17, 2008

Hello everybody and by everybody I mean Stavros, Kaitlyn, Josh, Becky, Samantha, Steve’s mom, Heathyr and Arlene. I think that’s everyone who visits this blog regularly. I don’t have any images to post this week so I thought I’d spend some time reviewing some photographic technology.

Flash. Not just your average on-camera flash but the off camera kind, the kind that you usually connect to your camera via an extension like cord like the ones seen in this article. Well, there is also something called a Pocket Wizard that allows you to control your flash wirelessly using radio transmitters. There units are quite expensive (+$300) but they have a range of over 1500ft so that’s understandable. Cheaper units that fire at closer ranges can be had on ebay for around $40 - they’re called 4-Channel Wireless Flash Trigger V2s and they’re made by Gadget Infinity shipping out of Hong Kong. Their ebay listing also has a list of compatible flashes (anything with an output voltage of less than 12v) and they will work with any camera with a hotshoe (the place where your external flash would normally attach to). Here are some useful links:

Strobist Blog and their Flickr Group

…and a sample of using an off-camera flash on a caving trip that I went on in June. I didn’t take the picture but this picture definitely inspired me to start looking into wireless off camera flashes. The flash was submerged in a ziplock bag and triggered remotely by the camera. The other lighting in the picture is from a headlamp and the on-camera flash. Thanks Kirk (photographer) and Theresa (Model).

“Oh look at that!”

He must have been staring at either a delicious looking plate of food, or an odd looking person, as this is a shot looking out over the railing on the outside of a gazebo at the Toronto Zoo.

The flash allowed for an incredibly sharp picture of this little guy.
