From this point forward, sunglasses will now be called ‘cool dudes’.

As in: “Did you remember to bring your cool dudes? –cause it’s really sunny out.”

Canon EOS 50D

50d

Yesterday canon released the 50D, an update of the 40D in almost every respect. The advantage of picking up this new model is the amazing amount of new technology packed into it. It picks up on innovations introduced initially in the lower XTI, XSI models such as live view and sensor cleaning (which is typical for Canon to do) and a number of new technologies, most notably the support of high def. and an amazing 3 inch screen with 920,000 dots compared to 230,000 on the xsi and 40d. This results in a screen with a comparable resolution to a 640 x 480 VGA computer monitor - amazing!

There is also enhanced noise reduction, a new sensor (15.1mp), auto lighting optimizer, face detection, the list goes on. For more see here and here. It ships in October for $1449.99 (body only) from Henry’s. The EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens introduced along with it has a nice range (18-200) that makes it the ideal all purpose lens for just under $750. However it doesn’t have a fixed aperture and has a rotating front barrel which pretty much makes it dead to me as I am a lens snob and proud of it. I like my lenses to be built like a tank not from fisher price.

Cobourg Beach and Photosynth

Posted on August 25, 2008

Cobourg Beach

Picture of Cobourg beach taken this weekend. Not a spectacular shot, however the composition (the railing crossing the lower corner) reminds me of a shot I took in California awhile back. I’ve also been playing around with photosynth and have had limited success with it. Here is a short review:

Close all applications, otherwise the application will time out during uploading.

Photosynth seems ideally suited to relatively simple architectural shots. It does not do well with nature and cannot seem to wrap its head around complex natural patterns and variable landscapes. Straight lines, simple stichtable patterns only.

Here is my first (second) attempt.

Alderville Panorama

Alderville

Two photos stitched together to show a true landscape shot of the Bowl at Alderville’s Black Oak Savannah and Tall Grass Prairie. Taken in late May before many of the flowers had bloomed and clearly the tall grass is quite short.

High Dynamic Range

The above shot was achieved by combining the various exposures of the three pictures below:

The final result looks surreal and some praise HDR photos for this fact, others despise them.  Basically the result is a shot that is in reality impossible to achieve with just one picture because there is no way you can properly expose really bright parts of the picture and really dark parts of the picture properly at the same time.

In the future I will have better examples of this, this was just my first attempt and it wasn’t even a set of pictures that I particularily liked until I made an HDR of them.

Sunset Reflection

sunlittrees

Another shot from Miller Lake. I tried to expose the shot to magnify the effect of the orange sunlight bouncing off the trees and it seemed to work out pretty good.

The only post processing done on this shot was a selective blur feature from Google’s Picasa to add more emphasis on the reflection as well.  This selective blur feature can also be had by using a special lens called a Lens Baby.  Visit www.lensbabies.com for more information.

Property on Indian River

Indian River

This section of the indian river bordered a property we looked at. Turned out it wasn’t what we were looking for, despite this amazing landscape shot. Too bad the picture is blown out in the top left corner-damn you metering!!!
