Off Camera Flash Preview

Posted on July 17, 2008

Hello everybody and by everybody I mean Stavros, Kaitlyn, Josh, Becky, Samantha, Steve’s mom, Heathyr and Arlene. I think that’s everyone who visits this blog regularly. I don’t have any images to post this week so I thought I’d spend some time reviewing some photographic technology.

Flash. Not just your average on-camera flash but the off camera kind, the kind that you usually connect to your camera via an extension like cord like the ones seen in this article. Well, there is also something called a Pocket Wizard that allows you to control your flash wirelessly using radio transmitters. There units are quite expensive (+$300) but they have a range of over 1500ft so that’s understandable. Cheaper units that fire at closer ranges can be had on ebay for around $40 - they’re called 4-Channel Wireless Flash Trigger V2s and they’re made by Gadget Infinity shipping out of Hong Kong. Their ebay listing also has a list of compatible flashes (anything with an output voltage of less than 12v) and they will work with any camera with a hotshoe (the place where your external flash would normally attach to). Here are some useful links:

…and a sample of using an off-camera flash on a caving trip that I went on in June. I didn’t take the picture but this picture definitely inspired me to start looking into wireless off camera flashes. The flash was submerged in a ziplock bag and triggered remotely by the camera. The other lighting in the picture is from a headlamp and the on-camera flash. Thanks Kirk (photographer) and Theresa (Model).
